Fedora 9 i386 Sulphur

Fedora 9 i386 Sulphur

Fedora 9 has been released – I have been waiting for this. For those of you who don’t know, Fedora is my distro of choice. I have been using Fedora since Fedora Core 3. And I will be upgrading to the latest release as soon as I get my hands on it.
I have started the download – but I have a 256kbps internet connection – and it will take around 4 days for the download to complete. After the install, I will write a review on it. I can’t wait to see the new KDE!

I have began a process of backing up my data so that nothing will be lost during the upgrade. No matter how careful I am, I always manage to loose something in the upgrade. Yeah, I know – Murphy’s Law. I hate Murphy. I am waiting to see what I loose this time. Last time it was my database. Luckily I was able to restore it from my backup – but the data entered after the backup was lost.

Slackware 13.0 (KDE)

Slackware 13.0 (KDE)

After one of the most intensive periods of development in Slackware's history, the long awaited stable release of Slackware 13.0 is ready. This release brings with it many major changes since Slackware 12.2, including a completely reworked collection of X packages (a configuration file for X is no longer needed in most cases), major upgrades to the desktop environments (KDE version 4.2.4 and Xfce version 4.6.1), a new .txz package format with much better compression, and other upgrades all around -- to the development system, network services, libraries, and major applications like Firefox and Thunderbird. We think you'll agree that this version of Slackware was worth the wait. Also, this is the first release of Slackware with native support for the 64-bit x86_64 architecture! Major kudos to Eric Hameleers for all of his work, especially on the 64-bit port.

ReactOS 0.3.10

ReactOS 0.3.10

The team behind ReactOS, the NT-compatible open source operating system, have released ReactOS 0.3.10, which comes with many improvements aimed towards making it easier to run ReactOS on real hardware.

The two biggest areas of focus for this release are the new Universal ATA driver and improvements in the USB stack. The new Universal ATA driver adds support for Serial ATA disk drives as well as partitions greater than 8GB. The improvements to the USB stack increase the compatibility with USB keyboards and mice.

There are still bugs in these areas, though. "These features are still under heavy development and have several known bugs," the ReactOS team warns, "but their inclusion should allow more people to run ReactOS on real hardware and are part of the extensive work to make ReactOS usable as an every day operating system."

Open Source Operating System

open source operating system yang baru

Debian 500 I386 Netinst

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short.

An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.

However, work is in progress to provide
Debian for other kernels, primarily for the Hurd. The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach) to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by the GNU project.

A large p
art of the basic tools that fill out the operating system come from the GNU project; hence the names: GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd. These tools are also free.

Of course, the thing that people want is application software:
programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 25000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) — all of it free.

It's a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all t
he basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian — carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together

Sidux 2009 3

sidux is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, Debian's most modern branch (called "Sid") and many free and open source applications.
